What structures are normally damaged / affected with an ankle sprain?



When your ankle is damaged from it being twisted too far from its usual position you will receive an ankle sprain. Ankle sprains refer to the damage to the ligaments connecting the bones in the ankle area. You can know that your ankle is swollen when the hear a pop or crack or if you find any symptoms of a strain ankle like pain, inflammation, and difficulties of walking

Ligaments are located at areas that flex and are strong fibrous connective tissues that connect to bones to allow us to flex and bend our our body parts. The bones that make up the ankle includes the tibia(the shin bone), fibula (a thin bone that runs beside the tibia, and the talus(the foot bone).  The lateral ligaments prevent over inversion of the foot while the medical ligaments prevent eversion of the foot. An inversion of the foot is vastly more common than an eversion of the foot. The Anterior Talofibular Ligament is a lateral ligament located at the front lateral articular facet(where two bones meet) of the talus and is the most common ligament to be injured.

Ice and rest could help with the recovery of mild sprains but more severe injuries could require more treatment for a full recovery or a faster recovery. Treatments include physiotherapy, surgery, medication, and immobilization within the ankle and let it heal.
